Apostolic Carmel Sisters

The Order of the Apostolic Carmel Sisters was founded by Mother Veronica of the Passion. She was chosen by God in mysterious ways first to move from the Anglican Church to the Catholic faith, then called to be a religious of the Sisters of St Joseph of the Apparition and then through a mystical experience was called to relinquish her first call and with dispensation from the Church to join the Cloistered Carmel in France to imbibe the Carmelite Spirituality and then start the Apostolic Carmel in Bayonne, France on July 16th 1868 with the Carmelite spirit but engaged in education. The first batch of Sisters came to Mangalore, India on November 19th 1870. Ever since through St Ann’s High school and Teacher Training Institute, the young girls of Mangalore have received quality education. The then Superior General Mother Aloysia A.C. of the Sacred Heart was a visionary who knew that the young girls of Mangalore needed Higher Education and so purchased land at Bendur in 1911 and the place was finally established with a school for the poor children and then a High School. The Sisters permanently settled themselves here on February 8th 1914 with the starting of St Agnes Convent and the schools started functioning from June 1st 1914. The Superior General was magnanimous in parting with the best portion of the prime land to make it over to the occupancy of the Parish Church. The small seed of A.C. Education that was sown in Bendur now has a huge campus almost a mini university- education starting with the Play Home, Kindergarten, Kannada and English Medium Higher Primary Schools, High School with parallel sections, Pre University College and St Agnes College autonomous that runs both undergraduate and postgraduate courses in the faculties of Arts, Science, Commerce and Business Management. St Agnes Special School for the Mentally Challenged was started in 1970 as the Centenary Memorial of the Apostolic Carmel. The Vocational Training Centre for the Mentally Challenged Adults and the Teacher Training Course in Special education were then added.

The Sisters of the two Convents continue to support the formation of the Bendur Parish and render their whole hearted cooperation for the development of the Parish by catering to both the spiritual and educational aspects of life.
