The status of a Public Charitable Trust has been accorded to Fr Peter S. Noronha Jubilee Education Trust under section 12 AA(b)(i) of the Income Tax  Act 1961 by the Income Tax Commissioner, Mangalore, after inspection of the objectives, activities and accounts of the Trust.

This richly-deserved recognition is a feather in the cap of St Sebastian Church, Bendur, Mangalore, whose Parish Pastoral Parish had founded the Trust exclusively for promoting higher education and awarding scholarships to post-graduate studies, as well as training for excellence in sports and entry into Civil Services.

With this status, granted in just its second year of functioning, donations made to the Trust are exempted under Section 80G within the limits prescribed under the Income Tax Act 1961. The designation of a Public Charitable Trust has enhanced the prestige of the Parish which is celebrating its centenary in 2014. 

The Trust was founded to mark the 75 years’ birthday jubilee of Fr Peter S Noronha, the then-Vicar of Bendur, during the 50th year of his priesthood.

Scholarships amounting to Rs 3,09,090 and Rs 3,96,260 were awarded to 10 youth during 2011-12 and 9 youth during 2012-13 and the amounts ranged from Rs 12,920 to Rs 50,000 per year, given to meritorious students belonging to the weaker sections, in proportion to the actual fees paid.

While exemption of income tax is certainly an incentive and the status of a public charitable trust testifying its authenticity, the Trust appeals to the public for generous donations with the sole objective of motivating many more deserving youth to do post-graduate studies.  Its idea is that financial means should be not the only stumbling block for a bright boy or girl to be deprived of post graduate studies or higher education.

The Trust maintains a savings bank account with the State Bank of Mysore, Shiva Bagh branch, Kadri, Mangalore 575002.
